COVID-19 Emergency Dental Care
To Our Wonderful Patients,
We hope you and your family are in good health. We are eager to get back to work like many of you! However, the world has been struck by the unprecedented events revolving around the pandemic. Our dental family was no exception. Our team has received many questions about when we are returning to normal business and what infection control measures we are taking in a post COVID-19 shelter-in-place world. I want to take some time to answer those questions.
First, I want to say that infection control and cleanliness has ALWAYS been our top priority. We sterilize ALL instruments, handpieces (drills) and burs after a thorough ultrasonic cleaning. Our sterilization technique involves using disposable pouches filled with the instruments then those pouches are placed in our steam “autoclave”. The steam sterilization process takes the instruments to 270*F and 27.1 psi for 5 minutes to kill all microorganisms like viruses. All instruments are left in the pouches until they are ready to be used, this keeps the instruments sterile. We test all our autoclave sterilizers and ultrasonic cleaners on a weekly basis, sometimes twice a week. All surfaces in the operatory are wiped down between each patient with a powerful disinfectant and we have removed all unnecessary items ( such as magazines and brochures ) from both the operatories and the waiting room.
When are we returning?
May 11th, 2020! We want to do things as well as humanly possible and are committed to being part of the solution, not the problem. That is why we ramped down and limited our practice a WEEK before Gov. Abbott required it and before most dental practices. We started staff training a week before opening and we are delaying opening a week to make sure we have it down! Our protocols are above and beyond what the authorities are recommending or requiring.
New Infection Control Procedures
Aerosol Vacuum – The control of the aerosol produced during routine dental work is probably the MOST important and most effective of our new infection control procedures. This vacuum sits below your chin and captures the aerosols and small droplets that leave your mouth. This makes ALL procedures, including cleanings, safe and sanitary. The vacuum uses an ULPA filter which filters out particles twice as small as a HEPA and perfect for containing viral particles. This represents the most significant advancement in dental infection control this century! ALL of our dentists and hygienists will have these devices available for all procedures.
Empty Waiting Room – Until further notice we will ask that when you arrive, please call to check-in. We will call you back when we are ready for you.
Mouth and Nose Coverage – We will require anyone entering the office to be wearing a mask covering the nose and mouth. Anything will work as long as it covers the nose and mouth. A mask will be available for those with appointments.
Patient Screening – 1-2 business days before your appointment we will call with screening questions and to confirm your appointment. Upon arrival, the check-in desk will ask those same screening questions again and take your temperature using an infrared thermometer.
Sneeze Barriers – You will notice that the business has installed barriers in the front desk area that protect both the staff and our patient in a way similar to the way a buffet protects the food.
